Introducing a unique category to the beverage industry

Cannabis Botanical Distillery (CBD) has developed a unique approach to processing whole cannabis sativa (hemp) into high-quality spirits, seltzers and ginger beer. Made with a nature-positive locavore mentality, the drinks needed to have broad appeal and talk to a moving market of health-conscious consumers who are drinking less but drinking better.

CBD engaged Juicebox to develop a brand identity that would highlight its unique natural provenance while educating consumers about its sustainable growing, harvesting and distilling process. As part of the media and sales plan, the family-run business needed a contemporary website to sell its products to consumers and stockists.

CBD is located on Raintree Farm in the sparsely populated Great Southern region of Western Australia, between the rugged Southern Ocean and the majestic tall timber of the old-growth forests. The small local population meant CBD also needed to connect with travellers and experience seekers around Australia to sustain the efforts of the boutique distillery.

CBD

One challenge with marketing a cannabis product — even non-psychoactive cannabis — is a certain stigma of the plant in mainstream culture. CBD wanted to steer clear of the  ‘hippie’ and ‘stoner’ themes of some other cannabis-based products and be approachable to all. This range is all about carefully crafted sustainable products that are deliciously appropriate for any drinking or dining experience.

Reshaping the perception of hemp-based products

Whole Hemp Spirits

It was important to the producers that the ‘non-psychoactive’ element was clear to their audiences, and the products highlighted their paddock-to-bottle ethos. The brand story was developed from CBD’s on-farm approach to growing, harvesting and distilling that considers the entire plant and minimises waste. In five simple words — Whole Hemp Spirits. Nothing Wasted — the essence of CBD becomes understandable and appealing to all those who appreciate a good drop.

Distinct simplicity

Juicebox developed a sophisticated and minimalist brand identity to create clear space in the crowded Australian spirits market. We took a stripped-back approach to the brand assets, for example, using grids for easy info location and a CBD logo set that calls to mind the icons used in the USA for cannabis-containing products.

Reflecting nature, science and creativity

The lab-meets-apothecary graphical style continues through the entire range of spirits and seltzers. CBD’s gin and vodka labels feature electron-microscopic photos by Justin Zoll of Cannabidiol for the Sativa Spirit bottles. When viewed through the bottle, the labels are further magnified and illuminated, with Zoll’s vivid colours connoting the synthesis of nature, science and creativity.
