The online environment is constantly changing, with new opportunities and threats emerging at an unprecedented pace. In our always-connected digital world, the stakes are higher than ever before.

As we navigate a period of geopolitical tension between global superpowers and their alliances, the Australian Government has spoken publicly about the cyber threats posed to private companies.

The ACSC Annual Cyber Threat Report 2020-21 revealed over 67,500 cyber crimes were reported last financial year, an increase of nearly 13% from the previous year. Self-reported losses from these cyber crimes totalled more than $33 billion.

Australia’s growing concern with cyber security

With several forms of cyber-attacks designed to target individuals and businesses, it’s no surprise that Australians are increasingly concerned about their sensitive information being stolen, held hostage and/or shared without consent.

In the last few years, the reported number of data breaches has continued to rise, with 55% of those incidents from malicious or criminal attacks, and 40% due to human error.

We reached out to cyber security specialist Michael Woods, CEO @ Tannhauser to give us insight on these data breaches. Michael said the majority of Australians are not informed when it comes to securing sensitive data on personal devices, local servers, websites and cloud environments.

There’s a critical need to highlight the risks and encourage a more proactive approach to looking after your personal data, the data of your company, and the data of the customers and companies connected to you. So how can you improve your cyber security?

Simple measures can include;

  • Educate your staff on cyber threats
  • Limit access to the sensitive data (select employees)
  • Enable multi-factor authentication for every internet-accessible account
  • Avoid easily guessable passwords
  • Be cautious when opening attachments in emails from unknown senders
  • Avoid connecting your devices to a public Wi-Fi network
  • Turn on your device firewall and install antivirus software on all devices
  • Back up your data
